Extended Studies Programme

The Extended Studies Programme (ESP) is designed to extend the IST curriculum to an interesting and unfamiliar outdoor/cultural setting in Tanzania. All Secondary students (except Grade 12) are required to participate in ESP trips. Typically, ESP trips are five-day overnight or residential trips. The aims and objectives of each trip support the components listed below:

  • Service and/or Adventure
  • Connection to Tanzanian Context
  • Approaches to Learning (ATL) Development
  • IB Learner Profile

ATL Driven Requirements

Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills are a very important factor in deciding whether a student can or cannot attend a trip. These skills (Communication, Social Skills, Self-Management, Research, and Thinking) are universally used throughout the school to gauge at what level of independence a student is in and how well they can work with others. For each ESP trip, there is a minimum requirement for each of these skills to help ensure that the trip goes safely and without interruptions to the rest of the group.

Global Contexts

In IB schools, Global Contexts are used to help students reconcile what they've learned in class with "how it works" in real life.
All ESP trips are planned around these contexts, that's why certain trips are only for certain grades. The Global Contexts of the IB course (MYP/DP) determine what the learning outcomes of a trip should be.
